The Benefits of Performing Arts Education

Research shows that kids involved in the performing arts do better academically. They "tend to have enhanced cognitive, motor, and social development to boot." And a recent large-scale study found that arts education helps kids become more compassionate and makes them more engaged at school.

Learn With Us

Oahu Storybook Theatre provides workshops for Hawaii's keiki.

First and foremost, storybook workshops are fun.

Learning improv-acting skills via theatre games also helps kids open up more and communicate more freely.

Participants make new friends, gain confidence, build self-esteem, and exercise their bodies, minds, and imaginations.

WHEN?

Sessions are 2 hours long. We offer both stand-alone workshops and series.

Instant Fairytale

The “Instant Fairytale” workshop is an opportunity for keiki to experience the many benefits of theatre education.

Participants in the workshop will use their imaginations to build a story together. We’ll use a classic tale as the loose basis for this story, though the children will add their own ideas, too, so the end product will be their creation. The children will learn to use their whole bodies to create characters. The workshop will be fun-based, and for the kids it will feel like play. It will conclude with a very short performance for parents. Parents will also be allowed to stay in the room and watch the workshop, if they wish.

Around the mid-way point in the workshop, participants will engage in a brief arts-and-crafts project, where they will decorate playbills for the show they’re creating. These will be given to their parents prior to the performance, and the families can keep them as a take-away to remember the event.

Participants will...

  • Have fun
  • Make new friends
  • Gain confidence
  • Exercise their bodies, minds, and imagination
  • Unleash their spontaneity and creativity
  • Learn acting skills
  • Create a story and act it out together
  • The workshop culminates in a short performance for parents
